After the victory obtained by Hamilcar over the mercenaries, the vengeance taken on the Numidians for assisting them, excited in that people an implacable hatred against the Carthaginians. But in the year before the commencement of the Christian aera two-hundred and thirteen, Syphax, king of the Massaesyli, having contracted an alliance with the Romans; Gala, king of the Massyli, concluded a treaty with the Carthaginians. Hence began a war between the Numidian monarchs, which was waged with various success and great change of connection; until, by the assistance of the Romans, Massinissa, the son of Gala, reduced the kingdom of Syphax; and this last prince being taken prisoner by the Romans, died in Italy. Yet his son Vermina was assisted by the same people to take possession of his father's throne; part of the Massaesylian kingdom being given to Massinissa as a reward for his fidelity to them. Massinissa was between eighty and ninety years of age, when by bringing Asclrubal and his army into an hopeless situation, he obliged the Carthaginians to accept a disgracefull peace from him, just before the third punic war broke out: the reserve on their intentions concerning which, observed towards him by the Romans, offended him so much, that when applied to for a body of troops to Chapter act with theirs, h, e answered, they should have a reinforcement from Fifth Period. him when they needed it.
